Philly Requiring Bloggers To Pay $300 Kurofuneparry writes "Pennsylvania generally and Philadelphia specifically have had a number of budget issues and some bloggers are seeing the results. From the article: "yes, cash-strapped cities can't very well ignore potential sources of income. But at the same time, there must be some room for discretion and common sense.""

Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Mon, 23 Aug 2010 13:49:00 GMThttp://kaleb.libr8.us/post/72531401/Philly-Requiring-Bloggers-To-Pay-300urn:www-soup-io:1:72531401regulargovernment ACTA Internet Chapter Leaked — Bad For Everyone roju writes "Cory Doctorow is reporting on a leaked copy of the 'internet enforcement' portion of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. He describes it as reading like a 'DMCA-plus' with provisions for third-party liability, digital locks, and 'a duty to technology firms to shut down infringement where they have "actual knowledge" that such is taking place.' For example, this could mean legal responsibility shifting to Apple for customers copying mp3s onto their iPods." Adds an anonymous reader, "Michael Geist points out that the leaks demonstrate that ACTA would create a Global DMCA and move toward a three-strikes-and-you're-out system. While the US has claimed that ACTA won't establish a mandatory three strikes system, it specifically uses three-strikes as its model."

Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Sun, 21 Feb 2010 22:40:00 GMThttp://kaleb.libr8.us/post/45926983/ACTA-Internet-Chapter-Leaked-Bad-For-Everyoneurn:www-soup-io:1:45926983regulargovernment INTERPOL Granted Diplomatic Immunity In the US ShakaUVM writes "A couple of weeks ago without any fanfare or notice in the media, President Obama granted INTERPOL full diplomatic immunity while conducting investigations on American soil. While INTERPOL has been allowed to operate in the US in the past, under an executive order by President Reagan, they've had to follow the same rules as the FBI, CIA, etc., while on American soil. This means, among other things, the new executive order makes INTERPOL immune to Freedom of Information Act requests and that INTERPOL agents cannot be punished for most any crimes they may commit. Hopefully the worst we'll see from this is INTERPOL agents ignoring their speeding tickets." Update: 01/05 02:57 GMT by KD : Reader davecb pointed out an ABC News blog that comes to pretty much the opposite conclusion as to the import of the executive order.

Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Mon, 04 Jan 2010 23:35:00 GMThttp://kaleb.libr8.us/post/40491829/INTERPOL-Granted-Diplomatic-Immunity-In-the-USurn:www-soup-io:1:40491829regulargovernment Hackers Fail To Crack Brazilian Voting Machines blueser writes "From Nov 10th to Nov 13th the Brazilian Government hosted a public hacking contest to test the robustness of its voting machines. 38 participants from private and public IT companies (including the Brazilian Federal Police) were divided into 9 teams, which tried several different approaches to try to tamper with the software installed on the machines, and even to physically interfere in other stages of the process. All attempts (aside from a minor one which would not compromise the overall results) failed, and observations from the participants and neutral observers will be taken into account to improve the process even further. Here is the official announcement for the contest (Google translation; Portuguese original). A summary of the results is available in the Brazilian press (original). Brazilian voting machines use Linux." US voting officials ought to be envious of their Brazilian counterparts, or ashamed, or both. Perhaps this MIT-developed cryptographic voting system offers a way forward.

Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Sun, 15 Nov 2009 06:55:00 GMThttp://kaleb.libr8.us/post/34910857/Hackers-Fail-To-Crack-Brazilian-Voting-Machinesurn:www-soup-io:1:34910857regulargovernment
